LIVE IN A POSTCARD   There are few truly wild places left in the US, and the Black Hills of SD is one of them.  Nearly 1,500 magnificent bison wander Custer State Park alone, which they share with elk, mountain goats, prairie dogs, eagles, hawks, burros, pronghorns, antelope, bighorn sheep, deer and other animals which roam freely among the Hills.  Amidst pure nature, explore home to the great Sioux Nation and “Paha Sapa”, the Lakota term for “hills that are black” because their pine covered slopes look as dark as shadows from afar.  Fish along the Missouri River.  Hike to the top of Harney Peak, the highest peak between the Rock Mountains and the Alps!  Hunt, paddle boat, ski, snowboard, horseshoe, horseback ride, buffalo safari, motorcycle.  Experience authentic pow wow celebrations, Woyatan Wacipi drum and dance, and other rich tribal traditions.

Striking Badlands National Park in SD

Pack more experiences into a single trip and visit the awe inspiring Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorials, Wall Drug, the underground wonderland of Jewel Cave National Monument, and the striking barren landscape of the Badlands National Park.  Skeletons of ancient camels, three-toed horses, saber-toothed cats and giant rhinoceros-like creates are among the many fossilized species found here.  Living creatures abound amid the purple, yellow, orange, red tan and gray spires, buttes, canyons and pinnacles.

Don’t just get close to nature; experience it!  Feel the thunderous rumble of the largest herd of bison in North America trampling feet from you at the Buffalo Roundup, September at Custer State Park.  The annual Roundup not only is a spectacular charge, it also is an essential tool in managing and maintaining a healthy herd.  While there, handle buffalo, watch Park staff brand and vaccinate the herd, take a hayride, join a chuck wagon cookout, shop the art exhibits, and taste prize winning chili.
